In the artists own words  . . . . “After graduating from VCA I was all set for life as a painter.  Street art began as a hobby on the side that seemed to take on a life of its own then grew and grew.  Now I see the two mediums as complimentary.  The possibilities for my drawings are infinite.

I see drawing on walls as a beautiful challenge… the challenge of space and constraints.  Defying gravity, dancing with gravity.  The love affair continues…”

These bicycle coat racks are hand made by Jos Van Hulsen in his home studio in West Footscray. Perfect gift for a cycling enthusiast. These are by far our most popular product.

 The bikes are constructed from steel and wood with a durable powder coating finish. and have 5 hooks to hang scarves, hats, jackets or bags.

As each is bicycle coat rack is hand crafted, there will be slight variations to the ones pictured . . . . we think this is what makes them all so special. Jos is able to do custom colors on the bikes too just call us to discuss your requirements.

The bikes are easy to install. They need to be mounted on a wall using two small screws. These stud finding techniques will serve you well for any DYI project including putting up shelves or simply hanging a picture.

INSTALLATION:

Plasterboard walls

Locate your stud in the wall. The two holes are aligned so you only need to find one stud. Finding studs is relatively easy. There are a number of ways to find a stud either manually or using a stud finder.

The tapping method

If doing the job manually the tap method is quite effective. By tapping on a spot where a stud exists will produce a solid sound. Every place where there isn’t a stud will produce a hollow sound.

Using a magnet

This is actually as good as any stud finder and will save you lots of dollars. Rather than me explaining this I have found a good little video (which is slightly hilarious) In 2 minutes you can make your own stud finder that will work a treat every time. Click HERE to view.

Stud finders

The other option is to get your hands on a stud finder. Ask around as chances are one of your friends will have one. Otherwise you will need to purchase one. Prices can range dramatically. As with most things the more you pay, the more accurate your stud finder will be.

Brick walls

For brick walls you will need a masonry screw and masonry drill bit. Be sure to drill into the mortar and not the brick itself. First of all drill a hole in the spot you want to hang the work. Try to ensure both holes line up with the mortar on the brickwork. Once the hole is drilled use your masonry screw and screw the bike on to the wall. Hanging things on a brick wall is pretty straight forward however it all depends on the state of the mortar. In older building the mortar can be a crumbly. If it is your first time doing this it may pay to find a 'handy' friend to give you a hand.

Chrysalis was part of the Montalto Sculpture Prize and has recently been purchased by The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust and will soon be installed at the Fawkner Cemetery.

The work is intended to not only to reflect the transformations of the past, but also to draw attention to the continuing evolution of the present. The sculpture shows only one wing has emerged, the process halted before the revelation of its full. What exactly will it be? The unknown offers excitement, wonder and sometimes trepidation. A rebirth of sorts. A recognition of the care required to protect what is precious, until it is fully formed.

The work has been designed in response to the dynamic changes happening in my local neighbourhood. The thoughts underlying the sculpture is consideration for the delicate balance required between old and new. As with Chrysalis, the period of metamorphous is a delicate time. We need to manage this well and find a balance between the ‘new guard’ and the ‘old school’

Materials

Constructed from reclaimed steel and stone the sculpture. The work is intended to rust over time. The rust is an intended outcome, with the rich reds working in with the landscape, imbuing an organic tone to the work.

These upcycled cushions are lovingly handmade in NZ from upcycled woolen blankets. I fell in love with these cushions when a good friend brought me back one from NZ as a gift. Needless to say when we opened the shop they were a must have for our space. Seam cushions tick all the boxes for us. They are made by hand from recycled blankets. They are all limited editions due to availability of blanket fabric. This is sustainable production at its best.

They covers are easily removed and can be washed in cold water. The cushions measure 43 x 32cm. As these are all handmade there may be slight variation from the image provided . . . we think this is what makes them special! No two are exactly the same.

The Dimple Vase is handmade by West Footscay Ceramicist Jade Kellett.  The Vase comes in two sizes small measuring 9 x 6 x 7 cm and the large 8 x 11 x 9cm. Please keep in mind these are hand thrown so there may be slight variations in size.

Initially trained as a printmaker, Jade discovered a love fro mud whilst living in the unique desert environment of New Mexico in 2013.

The work is all hand thrown in her home studio. This current range of work brings together a love of surface relief and monotone palette, reflecting techniques and aesthetic developed through years of creating and studying prints. Designed with both function and a beautiful aesthetic these vessels are designed to be used as well as admired. As they are hand made each vessel is unique with no two exactly the same. We think this is what makes them so special!

All works have been fired at mid or high fire temperatures and are fairly robust however please hand wash and handle with care.

Earth Spirit 2 is a wall sculpture by Jos Van Hulsen. It was part of a body of work developed during a artist residency at Bundanon Trust in NSW. The property was originally donated by Arthur Boyd and his wife Yvonne for the purpose of nurturing artists and the creative process. Jos spent one month at Bundanon as an Artist in Residency. He was greatly moved and influenced by the Australian bushland. This sculpture was a made as a tribute to this landscape and the connection to land that Jos felt when he was there.

Emotional Ballast is a recent sculpture by Jos Van Hulsen which explores the emotional balancing act of being an artist. Based loosely on the ballast of a ship, the work is about feelings of vulnerability as an artist.  The need for a strong inner sense of self when your work is constantly validated (or not) by others.

Frida Kahlo’s Magnetic Dress-up  magnetic wardrobe is yet another hilarious product developed by ‘The Unemployed Philosophers Guild’  Dress her up for any occasion – we all know Frida had the coolest threads and dressed with a totally unique style! Stick her on the fridge and let the household have some fun dressing her up. The product measures Height 27.5cm x L 19cm x  Width 3mm

Happy Foot is a recent sculpture by Jos Van Hulsen. The work is all about fun and whimsy. Made from found object including an old boot makers foot, a old roller-skate and kitchen utensils. I cannot help but smile when I see this work - it is playful and fun.

Sculpture measures H60 x L50 x W12cm

Harness is one of Jos Van Hulsen's latest works made from old harness buckles from horse carriages and girth buckles from saddles. Jos's sculptural work is all about preserving history by using old materials and refashioning them into contemporary works. 'Harness' is a work that explores balance, symmetry and flow. As with all of Jos's work this is a one off sculptural work. The piece measures H 52 x L 21 x W 12 cm

This industrial bar stool comes in both a raw steel finish and a white finish. They are designed and hand made by Jos Van Hulsen in his home studio in West Footscray. The seats are made from recycled Mahogony and the base from powder coated steel. They measure 70cm in height, width 29cm at the base. The seat is 44cm x 44cm.
